Introducing Big Big Table: A Community Café That Nourishes Body and Soul

In our latest episode of the BARQAR Bites podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with Maddie Collins, the Community and Outreach Director of Big Big Table, a nonprofit community café serving Buffalo, NY, and the surrounding area. Big Big Table operates on a unique “pay-what-you-can” model, ensuring everyone has access to a warm meal and a welcoming space, regardless of their financial situation.

Maddie shared the inspiring vision behind Big Big Table and the impact the café has had on the community, offering food, friendship, and dignity to all who walk through their doors.

A Café with a Mission: Serving People with Dignity

Big Big Table’s mission is simple yet powerful: provide access to healthy, nutritious meals for everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. As Maddie explained, this mission is rooted in the belief that food is a basic human right. The café operates without set prices, allowing patrons to pay what they can afford, pay it forward, or volunteer their time in exchange for a meal. This model fosters community and removes the stigma often associated with food insecurity.

“We want people to come in and feel welcome, like they belong here, whether they can pay or not,” Maddie says.

Growing Together with the Community

Big Big Table’s story began with a desire to bridge gaps in the community. Maddie and her team work tirelessly to reach those most in need while fostering partnerships with local businesses and organizations. These partnerships have been instrumental in the café’s growth, allowing Big Big Table to expand its reach and impact. Collaboration is key, as Maddie emphasizes, “When we come together, we can do so much more than any of us could do alone.”

In addition to partnerships, Big Big Table relies on social media and community outreach to increase visibility, connect with volunteers, and engage with donors. By sharing their message online, the organization has been able to grow a dedicated following and attract supporters who believe in the café’s mission.

Impact Stories and the Power of Connection

For Maddie, one of the most rewarding aspects of her role is seeing how Big Big Table touches lives. She shared stories of individuals who, after dining at the café, returned to volunteer or donate, paying forward the kindness they received. Each meal served is a chance to make a meaningful connection and remind people they are valued.

“The community café model is about more than food. It’s about creating a space where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported,” Maddie shared.

How You Can Support Big Big Table

Big Big Table’s mission is sustained through community support, and there are several ways to get involved. Individuals can contribute by donating, volunteering, or simply sharing Big Big Table’s story to spread the word. Every contribution helps the café continue providing meals to those in need and fostering a stronger, more inclusive community.

Visit Big Big Table to learn more about their mission, find volunteer opportunities, or make a donation.

Thank you to Maddie Collins for joining us on BARQAR Bites and sharing Big Big Table’s inspiring journey. Their work is a testament to the impact of compassion, connection, and community support.
