Get to Page 1 Faster with Semantic Keywords

Great digital marketing starts with experts.  These experts can improve your ROI on your digital marketing investment.

Old school SEO is almost laughable – focusing on a singular keyword, and then stuffing it everywhere possible on your site to please search engines.

Yeah…Google caught onto that trick years ago. And thank goodness. Blog posts and web copy were a nightmare to read!

These days, there’s a much better way to get to page 1 of search results: semantic keywords.

What are semantic keywords?

Semantics is a branch of linguistics and logic that deals with the meaning of words and phrases. As you’ve probably guessed, semantic keywords are collections of words or phrases that are related either conceptually or in meaning.

For example, for a keyword search like “digital marketing,” semantically related keywords would include:

    • online marketing
    • paid search
    • digital advertising
    • inbound leads
    • social media experts

As you’ll notice, semantic keywords are more than just synonyms; they include terms that are related in concept, too.

Why do semantic keywords matter?

Semantic keywords are essential to great SEO because modern search engines use semantic search technology to determine users’ meaning. Essentially, Google tries to understand language on a higher order, and it serves up search results based on what it thinks people what people mean when they type queries.

And that’s just the start. Semantic search technology is so advanced that it recognizes a user’s GPS location and serves results based on location. Amazing, right?

How can semantically related keywords help your business rank higher in search?

Here are a few tips for putting semantic search to work for you:

    • Determine your core keywords. Use the Google AdWords Keyword Planner to develop a list of core keywords and phrases. Bear in mind that long-tail keywords may provide your best opportunities for ranking well.
    • Develop a list of semantically related keywords. Use a latent semantic indexing (LSI) keyword planning tool to conduct semantic keyword research and build a bank of supporting keywords. Thread these keywords throughout your content, subheads and meta data.
    • Write good content that humans find irresistible. Write conversationally and focus on content that’s relevant to your audience. When you write naturally for humans, you’re automatically improving your content’s “searchability” and performance. It’s that simple.
