How to Search Engine Optimize Your Site for Voice Search

A recent report from ComScore predicted that 50% of all online searches with be voice searches by 2020. With Google, Alexa and more home assistants showing up in homes across the nation, voice search is poised to change the entire search landscape.

10 Keys to SEO for Voice Search

To help capture more search engine traffic from voice searches, there are some key things  you should start doing on your website now:

  1. Write more Q&A Content
Most current voice searches are done in question format. People are looking for specific answers to questions – you need to be a resource that answers those questions in order to rank higher in voice search.
  2. Create individual Q&A Pages
Question and Answer pages are pretty popular – but most websites stuff all the Q&As onto the same page. This makes ranking for voice search a bit more challenging. Instead of stuffing all of these on to one page, create individual pages with the answers to each question. This allows you to optimize around one single question and you can be much more focused.
  3. Include Schema Markup
Using Schema markup can help improve the chances of being featured in a rich snippet in search. If you’re featured as a rich snippet it’s far more likely that you’ll also rank in voice search.
  4. Create List Articles
List articles (like this one) offer step-by-step answers to specific queries and are more attractive for voice search.
  5. Include Long-Tail Terms
People conducting voice searches are more likely to use longer-tail searches so begin incorporating more long-tail terms and related terms into your content.
  6. Use Location-Based Terms
People doing voice are much more likely (for now) to search for something local. 58% of consumers used voice to local business info in the last year. 46% of voice search users look for a local business daily. Append your keywords with terms like “-near me” and “-around me” and you’ll have a better chance of ranking in local and voice search.
  7. Get Faster
Fast sites seem to have a better chance of ranking well in voice. Use tools like Google Site Speed Test to identify opportunities to improve site load time.
  8. Get Authoritative
Sites that are seen as authoritative and have a high page and domain ranking tend to rank highly for voice. Look to build more inbound links by adding great content.
  9. Get Social
Pages that rank well for voice also tend to have higher volumes of social shares. When creating great, new content, share it on social, put some paid reach behind it, and try to generate more social engagement.
