Google’s Mobile Update Coming in May Could Impact Your Search Rankings

Google has recently announced on their webmaster central blog that another algorithm change tied to mobile sites is coming in May.

Last year, Google announced a rather large update to their search ranking algorithm. At the time, it was coined “Mobilegeddon” and gave higher ranking value to websites that were mobile friendly. At the time there was some shift in ranking results and companies that had a nice mobile experience did see a bump in rankings. This most recent update plans to dig deeper into mobile-friendliness and shake things up again.

Test your site!

Not sure if your site is mobile-friendly or not?  Check it. Start by opening your website on your phone or tablet. Is it easy to use, read and navigate without zooming in? Good, you pass the first test. Next, run your site through Google’s “Mobile-Friendly Tester.” This will provide much more detail on the mobile-friendliness of your site and highlight specific changes you should consider. We offer mobile website development and search engine optimization services to make sure your site looks great across all devices and ranks well in search engines.

Follow Google’s suggestions.

Your website should follow some basic mobile guidelines and Google tells you exactly what those are!  Use Google’s Mobile Friendly Website Overview to find out what it truly means to be mobile friendly. They walk you through step-by-step on how your website should be built and performed. And if you don’t have time to read through this, call us! Our team can help make sure you use best practices and don’t receive a demotion in search rank.

Keep an eye on traffic.

Finally, be sure to keep a close eye on your website traffic by using Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools. Both of these are free services/tools that provide insight into your web ranking and traffic statistics. Keep a close eye on mobile traffic to be sure you aren’t seeing a decline in ratings or rankings.
