Bad Websites … ARE (IM)MOBILIZED. Are You Following These 5 Keys to a Great Mobile Website?

Smart websites…adjust to the device they are viewed on.

Let’s do some quick role-playing. Imagine yourself of one these situations:

Situation 1: Small retail shop owner in a tourist area.

You have a quaint little shop that lives and dies by tourism traffic. You open your shop for the day but quickly find that for some reason the door handle is sticking. After about an hour you notice that some people are having a real hard time opening the door. In fact, it’s so bad the tourists walking by think you’re closed and they keep walking down the street.

Situation 2: Local manufacturer that distributes product catalogs.

For years, 40-60 percent of your business comes from people who call in to order out of the product catalog you mail out. Every day at 9 a.m. your sales people start fielding calls from customers placing orders. But one dropped call at 9:15, turns into eight dropped calls by 10 a.m. By noon about half of all your inbound calls are cut-off—dial tones all around.

As a smart business professional, you’re going to do whatever it takes to get things fixed, right? There is no way a sticky door is going to cannibalize your foot traffic—even if you had to fix it yourself or prop it open all day! As the manufacturing call center supervisor, that phone company is going to feel your wrath. You’re going to give them hell until those calls start coming through without being dropped—after all you can’t let ½ of your business go to the dial tone.

This seems pretty straight-forward, right? The thing is, businesses all over do this every single day—without even knowing it!

Let me explain by sharing some interesting statistics:

  • 84% of people will research a company’s website before doing business.
  • 56% of all web traffic now comes from mobile devices.

So what. It’s not a big surprise that people do their research online now. We all know that. And people are always on their phones—so maybe not a huge surprise there.

The kicker, however, is many companies still have websites that look and perform HORRIBLY on mobile phones. More than half of your prospects are learning about your company on mobile. Not having a GREAT mobile website is like keeping a sticky door or just settling for dropped calls!

Here are the key things to look for to ensure you have a great mobile website:

  1. Is your website responsive?

Responsive websites conform to the device they are viewed on. When you load your website on your tablet, iPhone or desktop computer, it should adjust to fit the screen. If it doesn’t, get it fixed.

  2. Is it readable?

Make sure the mobile experience is easy for prospects. If your text is so small it’s impossible to read, people will leave. Also, if there is too much text, people may leave. Break things up with headlines, bullets, numbered lists, etc. Make long copy short when you can.

  3. Can you easily convert?

People have fat thumbs and small screens. If your navigation is small or buttons are too small, people won’t be able to convert. Fix it so they can easily do business with you.

  4. Is key information accessible easily?

Make essential information like your phone number, address and other info simple to find. Make sure it’s right at their fingertips!

  5. Is it mobile optimized?

Google and the other search engines reward sites that are mobile optimized. Make sure your site loads quickly on mobile. Consider creating customer AMP pages (Accelerated Mobile Pages) to make it easier for prospects to load on slow networks and improve your mobile search rankings.
