Tips for Getting Patients to Leave Online Reviews

  • Nearly 9 out of 10 people have read online customer reviews to determine the quality of a local business (BrightLocal.com).
  • 72% of potential customers trust online reviews, according to SearchEngineLand.com’s recent survey of nearly 3,000 consumers.

If you’ve read our blog, you’ve seen stats like this referenced many times before. The simple truth is, customers (including potential patients) use online reviews to guide their decision making.

So all you have to do is get a bunch of stellar reviews from happy patients, right?

Right!

But wait a second – just how is your practice supposed to get the great online reviews it needs?

You could try planting the idea in patients’ heads while they’re under anesthesia:

“When you wake up, you will feel compelled to grab your smartphone and write an amazing online review for our office…”

Well, you could try that. But, um, it would be WRONG.

Here’s how to get it right – and get more patients to leave online reviews:

  • Be on multiple review sites.

    Most patients have a preferred review site. Some love Google+, others like to leave reviews on Facebook or Yelp. Create a presence on every review site that makes sense for your practice, so it’s easy and convenient for patients to share their experiences.

  • Send a personalized follow up email.

    A simple, polite request for a review (with links to your social media profiles and review sites) often works well. Make sure you include specific instructions for contacting you directly if the patient’s experience was anything less than fantastic.

  • Train your team.

    Explain to everyone in your practice how important positive reviews are. Then, train them to respectfully (yet directly) ask patients to write reviews. Your employees can say something as simple as, “We value your business, and your opinions matter to us and other patients. We’d really appreciate it if you’d take a few minutes to review your experience with us.”
